Every International Relations theory is said to have its own sociological underpinnings such as nationality, class, or gender. Critics of positivist meta-theory have raised fundamental questions regarding value-neutrality of current IR theories. Korean IR scholarship was not an exception in its orientation in both explanatory and nonnative theorizing, having been heavily influenced by Western IR theoretical traditions. This article problematizes Korean IR theories from the perspective of sociological theory of knowledge. It argues that theory should be firmly based on its own historical experiences and impending policy concerns. By reviewing current, Korean IR theoretical scholarship and orientation, it suggests a future possible course for further development of Korean IR theory.
