There are some positive aspects in the introduction of electronic protectors that provide the understanding for the score obtained in a competition to audiences and that makes it possible to present vigorous games and minimize disputes in referees' misjudgement, which is the major troubles in Taekwondo competitions. However, there are also certain negative advantages in the use of electronic protectors and that cannot be ruled out altogether. Thus, this study attempted to propose a future direction that develops such electronic protectors and Taekwondo competitions by investigating the problems existed in games and protectors based on the results of the analysis of some competitions, such as the WTF International Taekwondo Championship with electronic protectors in March 2007 that was the first competition with electronic protectors, the 37th KTA President Flag National Group Competition at Samcheok from August 15 to 22 (8 days) in 2007, and the Taekwondo Games with Electronic Protectors in the Competition of the National Sports Games at Gwangju, Jeonnam, 2007.
The subject of this study was selected from average audiences and Taekwondo related specialists and this study applied in-depth interviews for these people by using semistructured questionnaires based on the previously mentioned three competitions in which an in-depth investigation was performed for each competition court with three senior researchers and three assistant researchers in the 88th National Sports Games.
The results obtained from the analysis can be summarized as follows:
First, the problem of electronic protectors that occurred most frequently was the malfunction of sensors, 83 times, and the complain and retardation of games due to misjudgement was recorded as 26 times. In addition, errors caused by damages, problems occurred by the strength of weight, and mechanical troubles were represented as 15, 7, and 7 times, respectively.
Second, the type of victory or defeat that showed most frequently was represented in the order of the awarding of a decision, extended games (sudden death), decision on superiority, and RSC.
Third, the problems of electronic protectors obtained by using an inductive analysis were classified as the scope of strength, knuckle points, wearing sensation, and sensors and scoring points.
