The purpose of this study is to analyze Walt Whitman’s view of love in his poetry, Leaves of Grass. The theme of love is one essential quality in his poetry because it illustrates the various aspects of his humanistic and political thoughts. First, I will discuss the principle of equality. As a means of equality, he abolished the discriminations between man and woman, body and soul, good and evil, and life and death. Woman is very important to his democratic mind of equality. Next, I’ll show two kinds of love in the “Children of Adam” poems and the “Calamus” poems. The first one is the heterosexual love called ‘amativeness.’ Whitman bravely raised his voice to sing a new vision of woman’s body and sexuality in the nineteenth century. By strongly claiming that woman could also feel a sexual desire like man, he liberated woman’s sexuality repressed. The second one is the comradeship called ‘adhesiveness.’ Whitman thought man’s sexual energy as a primal creative energy. This is the reason why sexual images and words such as ‘lover,’ ‘comrade,’ and ‘calamus’ appear frequently throughout his poetry. Finally, I’'ll say how his love develops in the direction of humanistic, universal, transcendental and optimistic faith in his poetry. And I’ll conclude how he made the ideal democratic country on the basis of that kind of love and faith in his poetic world.
