Wordsworth’s The Ruined Cottage, which later became one important part of The Excursion, marks his early achievement as a great poet. The poem not only contains his lifelong central theme but indicates the poetic style and form which will be the germ of all his subsequent development. The poetic theme of The Ruined Cottage is on the relationship between Nature, Man, and Society. Wordsworth observed that the expanding of industrialism would collapse the traditional rural landscape. His pathos and love to the rural family are well exemplified by the suffering of the abandoned woman Margaret. By introducing the Pedlar to the reader in the poem, Wordsworth not only reveals the tragic breakdown of the rural environment, but tells the way to overcome the decreasing morality. As a Wordsworth’s prototypical pilgrim, the Pedlar by using his wisdom of nature reconstructs the story in the context of the notion of the One life. The role of the Pedlar, that Wordsworth bestowed to him, is to find the spirit in nature and teach it to the reader. Finally, the Pedlar of The Ruined Cottage appears to be the form of the philosophical wanderer that Wordsworth himself would have become.
