This study aims to find “the recognition of reality,” which is the central theme of Saul Bellow’s fiction, The Dean’s December. The Dean’s December is a tale of two cities, Chicago and Bucharest, in which the protagonist Albert Corde meditates upon “reality.” Bucharest is full of debilitation and death and Chicago is full of depravity and decadence. Corde, a former journalist and professor of journalism knows “nothing true.” He wants modern people to realize “true reality” －the absence of morality, no real human relationship, isolation and so on- through his many articles, but he fails. On the contrary, he is alienated by mass media. In Bucharest, he realizes the importance of moral leadership and human relation through the death of his mother-in-law Valeria. In Chicago, he thinks modern man suffers from moral and emotional atrophy, and Corde predicts consequences unless the present course is altered and a new path is taken. After resigning his job, he feels “true reality” when he climbs an astronomical observatory with his wife.
