In Mr. Sammler’s Planet, although Mr. Sammler often represents the paradoxical ambivalence as an incomplete man, he is regarded as a proper image of modern man who lives in a chaotic society and tries to teach the degraded young people the morality he acquired through many hardships. Especially, he has a conservative moral attitude toward sex and criticizes modern men. In the death of Dr. Gruner, he realizes that the man with a moral sense should perform the duties assigned to him faithfully. The man without a conscience is only an intellectual animal. A moralist emerges through a considerable effort of will and does not come into being naturally. In this novel, Saul Bellow expresses the idea that moral consciousness existing deep within the human mind becomes the essence in pursuit of a social and moral self.
