The theme of incest is featured prominently in Faulkner's fictions. In view of the fact that incest is committed within family, it is always discussed in the connection with Oedipus complex. In the face of Caddy's promiscuity, Quentin in The Sound and the Fury, as a hereditary of the Southern tradition, is convinced that incest will provide the means to restore the lost innocence of childhood of Caddy, to regain a mother, to relieve the glorious Old South. His desire for incest represents that for self-sufficiency, wholeness, and oneness. He can find only in death the perfect consummation of love. Obsessed with the lost primal world, he doesn't permit any alternative other than it. He is a paranoiac character. Deleuze and Guattari stand against oedipalization, thinking that Oedipus complex is based on phallocentrism, and view the mad as examples of those in touch with the power of pre-symbolic. Darl, in As I Lay Dying, makes no separation between personal and social experience in his mother's funeral ceremony. For him the relationship between word and action is direct and immediate. By refusing the funeral, he decomposes his family's inconsistence between words and actions and suppresses his incestuous impulses with Dewey Dell. It can be interpreted as resisting Oedipal prison. He is a schizophrenic who proceeds through conceptual dichotomies: existence and non-existence and life and death.
In conclusion, Quentin's world is defined by lines of integration and territorialization that arrest the flows. On the other hand, Darl's world is defined by lines of escape that follow the deterritorialized flows. Darl's anti-Oedipal attitude is a metaphor for deterritorialization against the Southern regionalism.
