Since Samuel Johnson's famous essay on Milton correctly pointed out the stylistic defects and virtues of Paradise Lost, critics and scholars discussed its values from their own points of view. Eliot and Leavis, who were making every efforts to find out the new way of English poetry, attacked Milton's style and induced the hot “Milton controversy”. They argued that Milton's style had been exerting “the bad influence” on the English poetry by departing from the regular use and syntax of the colloquial language. Milton's ritual style, however, was the very virtue to Milton scholars such as C. S. Lewis, Christopher Ricks, and Geoffrey Hartman. They argue that Milton's epic style is the very effective device for approaching the ethos of Homer's primary epic. If modern reader of a secondary epic is to participate in the heroic ritual of the primary epic, highly ritualized style of the written text is required. Milton's epic similes, allusions and Latin syntax provide the continuity and volume similar to the Baroque organ music and architecture. Futhermore, entangled within the epic similes and allusions, the theme and motif of each episode is counterpointed and finely balanced by the counter-theme and counter-motif, containing Satan's energy within God's prescience and imperturbability. Milton's majestic Baroque architecture and organ music, with its liquid texture, more often than not elevates the reader's mind towards God and Heaven, and fulfills the proclaimed theme of justifying the ways of God to men.
