The purpose of this study is to analyze of the English modals by the epistemic approach through surveying the syntactic areas and semantic areas.
Fries(1940) classified the modals as follows: (a) ability or power (b) possibility or doubt (c) permission (d) duty or obligation (e) customary activity (f) fitness or propriety (g) futurity or prediction (h) wish or willingness.
In this study I analyze 'will' and 'shall' on the view of semantics, and all modals on the view of syntax. At first, I divided the usage of the modals of epistemic use and non-epistemic use. The non-epistemic usage is subject-oriented, but the epistemic usage is speaker-oriented.
The non-epistemic meaning of ‘will’ is volition, habitualness, but the epistemic meaning is prediction. On the other hand, the non-epistemic meaning of ‘shall’ is obligation, but the epistemic meaning is certainty of fulfillment.
In the syntactic areas, I analyzed the relations between the non-epistemic usage and epistemic usage of ‘negation’, ‘voices’, ‘interrogation’, and ‘condition clauses’.
