This article investigates to see what the exhibition of hygiene means in modern East Asian expos, focusing on Osaka's hygienic expo. This expo exhibited various kinds of statistical graphs, samples, diorama, photographs, and so on about women's hygiene, children's hygiene, oral hygiene, athletic hygiene, and so forth. These exhibitions made the spectators have absolute sense of sanitation, and so aimed at forming national bodies and civilized bodies. Though the ex.pos were characteristically public, erotic and grotesque bodies were exhibited in the expo. What for? The public did not easily agree to the enlightenment of a state which had wanted to make national bodies. The state power tried to allure the public by arousing their potential desires. The state, a supervisor of the expo wanted to achieve the educational effect that the spectators would feel the fear of diseases through the erotic realities and grotesque equipments. The pornographic characteristics were increased with the advertising decoration and the commercial interests of the companies related to hygiene, to the extent that they reached the limits of the government's approval. These exhibitions are in accord with the vogues of popular culture, 'ero-gro-nonsense' then, and the design and passage of venereal disease advertisement. The aspects of exhibiting hygiene in Osaka's expo was more or less different with those of expos of Korea, Taiwan, and China. The exhibition of bodies in East Asian expos was the result of a properly compromising attitude between the sides making spectators see and trying to see.
