It is said that the relationship between women and politics in Korea has been improved these days. This study argues that we need to pay attention to how the media describe and represent women in the political sphere in that the media in a society have influencing power on its political culture. However, this study focuses not on women politicians but on general women voters, as the latter is believed to be 'ordinary' members which provide this study with the effective tool to find out the true level of democracy in our society. That is, analysing how the media represent women voters as citizens enables us to recognise the way how the Korean society shapes women as citizens.
The result of critical discourse analysis of media reports on women voters from Jan. 2000 to July 2006 shows that the media give women voters the names of 'housewives' or 'antie.' The media also represent women voters as those 'indifferent in politics,' 'corrupted by money,' and 'emotional.' However, describing women civil organisations as 'informed,' 'rational,' and 'policy-oriented,' the media use them as a useful category to compare with general women voters, which this study argues to call 'double representation' by the media and elite-others.
Hence, this study suggests the necessities of the conversion of news values from traditional men-oriented ones to those based on gender differences and of report guidelines in more practical level for better representation of women in politics.
