The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of secreting Helicobacter species from cats and to identify the feline Helicobacter species, and to correlate the presence of a Helicobacter infection with several factors like clinical symptoms, age, gender and habitat. Sixty-seven cats (32 male and 35 female) between 3 months and 7 years old were submitted for this study. Fecal samples of the studied cats were initially frozen and stored at -20℃ until analysis. DNA was extracted with the AccuPrep Stool DNA Extraction Kit (Bioneer, Korea) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis revealed that 12% of the cats (8 of 67) were infected by Helicobacter species. The positive samples were submitted to identify the species by species-specific PCR. The results revealed that 7 cats were infected with Helicobacter heilmannii and 1 cat had Helicobacter felis. None of them was harboring Helicobacter pylori or other Helicobacter species. We found no correlation between the genders of cats and the prevalence of Helicobacter species. However, the prevalence was higher in the cats of breeding kennels than those of animal clinics and it was increasing in older age groups. This study improved that cats could secrete Helicobacter species, mainly Helicobacter heilmannii, and the detection rate was 12%.
