A herbal extract mixture, Y-mix (ongoing a patent application; application number: CS332) was divided into different doses (2X, 1X, and 0.5X) and administered to B6C3F1 mice for two weeks prior to giving them a lethal oral injection of ethanol (6 g/㎏ body weight per day) twice. Y-mix was found to offer effective protection against ethanol-induced toxicity and lethality in a dose dependant manner. In addition, Y-mix increased the survival rate after the final dose of ethanol. The effect was even detected at a middle dose of the Y-mix (Y-mix 1X). The necropsy findings revealed that the Y-mix treated animals had less severe pathological lesions (small intestine wall thinness, liver injury and necrosis of cardiac muscles suggesting that the Y-mix offers protection against acute ethanol toxicity and lethality.
