Effects of transportation on hematological and serum biochemical values were investigated in five male cynomolgus monkeys imported from Japan. They were underwent air and ground travel-related stress in transport cages for a 15 hour-transit time. On arrival, body weight was found to have reduced. RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit values were significantly elevated immediately on arrival, and serum biochemical parameters such as creatinine, glucose, triglyceride, total bilirubin, inorganic phosphate, and sodium values were significantly higher immediately on arrival than during subsequent weeks. However, all hematological and serum biochemical values, except for blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total cholesterol, and chloride values, were within the Jimits of reference range data. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), total cholesterol, and chloride values exceeded the normal reference range, and thus these changes were associated with the process of transportation. These changes should be considered when examining the health status of newly acquired animals during quarantine.
