A simple technique is used to assimilate satellite-based rain rates into global reanalysis. The procedure utilizes the global spectral model in combination with an analysis nudging technique, based on Newtonian relaxation, towards reanalysis and rain rate nudging via modification of the vertical humidity profile which redistributes the heat and moisture. The new reanalysis obtained by continuous assimilation over one season is compared with other observed rain rates and reanalysis over the Tropical Ocean, where scarcity of observational data leads to large differences among the reanalyses. The produced rain rate is shown to be much more closely correlated to the observed one than those from reanalyses. For the sub-optimal choice of the assimilation parameters, we examined the sensitivity to the nudging coefficients. From these experiments, we found that the use of smaller nudging coefficients for divergence, temperature and humidity in comparison to those of vorticity and surface pressure yields high correlation and small root mean square error with observed rain rate. Consistently, all reanalyses and our rain rate assimilated product show strong internal consistency between the rain rates and their respective divergent fields. Henceforth, we conclude that improved rain rate as realized in the new reanalysis also improves the divergent circulation and associated moisture convergence.
