Dianthus japonicus Thunb. was exposed to NaCl stress to investigate its growth response and uppermost limit of salt tolerance at different growth stages for its use on saline area. NaCl stress was imposed at germination, seedling (41 days after seeding), and mature plant stages (162 days after seeding). The plants were subirrigated everyday with NaCl solutions (0, 50, 100, 200, and 300 mM) at seedling stage and 400 mM NaCl was added for the experiment of seed germination and mature plants. Almost all seeds germinated with 100 mM NaCl treatment, but seed germination was suppressed with over 200 mM NaCl treatment. At seedling stage, growth was inhibited even with 50 mM NaCl treatment. At mature stage, however, plant growth was not seriously affected by 100 mM NaCl treatment. Proline content was increased in adversely affected plants by salt stress. Na? and Cl? were accumulated more in the shoot than in the root as NaCl concentration increased while K?, Ca²?, and Mg²? contents were not adversely affected by NaCl treatment. These results indicate that seed germination and mature plants growth were more tolerant than seedling growth under NaCl stress condition in D. japonicus and it has a potential to grow in saline area.
