Lyu Chi-Hwan went through many troubles. This writing objects to study the poems that put into his experiences living at Manchuria, which is the northern poetry.
First of all, Lyu Chi-Hwan had to hurry up and leave his hometown due to his personal fault, which is different from what is widely known. When he went to Manchuria, he had to get some help from people he knew from Tong Yong.
Second, Lyu Chi-Hwan was in the leadership position while other Korean farmers lived miserable at Manchuria. Because of that reason, he had to be in hurry to escape when Manchuria was about to perish in 1945.
Third, Lyu Chi-Hwan left five pro-Japanese works when he was staying at Manchuria for 6 years, which are 「the Head(수)」, 「the Previous night(전야)」, 「the Great Bear(북두성)」, 「the Pacific aggression War and resolution of Writers (대동아전쟁과 문필가의 각오)」, and 「the plains(들녘)」.
Fourth, Japanese imperialists’ greed toward Manchuria is hidden underneath of the terms, ‘Manchuria cultivation’ and ‘national union’. These ideas, ‘cultivation’ and ‘union’, are contained in the pro-Japanese poems that Lyu Chi-Hwan wrote. 「the plains(들녘)」 with the idea of cultivation and 「the Head(수)」 with the idea of union show his life at Manchuria and superficial recognition on the reality.
Fifth, 「the Previous night(전야)」 and 「the Great Bear(북두성)」 are the symbolic pro-Japanese poems. 「the Previous night(전야)」 features the victory of Pacific aggression War and the power of an invincible emperor in the structure of the prelude, the body, and the finale. 「the Great Bear(북두성)」 includes an idea of public management on the East Aisa.
In conclusion, Lyu Chi-Hwan hurried to leave his hometown and wrote the five pro-Japanese works featuring the ideas of cultivation and union as well as public management on the East Aisa. This writing did the ground work for the study on Lyu Chi-Hwan’s Manchurian Literature.
