Historical studies dealing with the Goryeo dynasty’s politics have been using methods and consulting methodologies that were similar to those which have been used in studying the history of politics of the Joseon dynasty. Scholars in this area of studies tended to view the political situations of the past, as variations of conflicts that had taken place between political powers, like viewing them as various forms of confrontations that continued between the ruling authority of the Kings and the political agendas of the vassals.
Yet the political right(status) of the vassals or the authority of the prime ministers are yet to be explained with enough clarity. And the Korean scholars’ determination to overcome the historical opinions created by the Japanese scholars during the Japanese occupation period are actually preventing the scholars studying Goryeo politics from overcoming(more like escaping from) the frame of analysis that had been used by the Japanese.
Viewing a specific situation as a case of confrontation between two opponents can be quite useful in providing clear interpretation of the nature of that political conflict in the political history of that specific time period. Yet the environment that has sustained and supported the continuation of such perspective among Korean scholars was no other than the cold war mentality that has continued to define the political climate of the Korean peninsula. And the end of the cold war status is requiring us to develop a new perspective and also a new frame of analysis for the political historical studies.
One of the issues that have been deemed most importantly in the historical studies of Goryeo dynasty’s politics was no other than the ‘country(nationality)’. For a long time, people have placed a lot of value upon achievements such as successfully battling invading foreign forces or escaping other country’s oppression and intervention. Historical studies on the scale of ‘country’ and ‘state’ have occupied the highest level of meaning so far. Yet this kind of research methodology is not the most effective one in exploring the individuals’ political lives, and the political nature of the everyday life(which refers to the human trait of maintaining the present status-quo, based upon one’s self-created habits composed of individual experiences). Studies of past (political) reforms should be able to elaborate upon the nature of such ‘ordinaries’.
Also, broader discussions should be arranged to define the nature of political factions more correctly. People in the past who even shared same birth-related backgrounds and social classes did not necessarily became members of the same political faction. Reasons that made them display different kinds of political activities should be explained. Historical studies of the Goryeo dynasty politics are facing new challenges, with the advent of the 21st century.
