This paper explores repetition in Korean and English electronic discourse within the framework of pragmatic discourse analysis. Based on the synchronous, interactive written computer-mediated communication (CMC) known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC), this paper investigates various types and functions of repetition with reference to the cyber interlocutor's interactive, psychological, and communicative motivations. The major interactional functions of repetition in electronic discourse include participating. participatory listenership, ratifying listenership, humor, savoring. stalling. expanding, and evaluating through patterned rhythm. This study demonstrates that boundaries and distinctions with regard to the forms and functions of repetition are not crystal-dear in that the language produced on IRC demonstrates distinctive features with reference to the organization of conversational sequence and exchange structure. It further discusses that participants in cyber interactions not only employ linguistic devices in different ways, but also express their opinions in less polite manners than they do in ordinary face-to-face interactions. Claiming that repetition is a discourse strategy in virtual communities, this study attempts to contribute to the better understanding of a new mode of CMC and electronic discourse.
