The research activity on new pesticide development has begun in Korea since 1987 when the international patent law on new chemical molecules was introduced. Active participants on the discovery R/D include Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), Dongbu Hannong Co. Ltd., LG Life Sciences Ltd. and KyungNong Ltd. cooperating with Crop Physiology & Weed Science and Environmental Toxicology Lab. in Seoul National University. Despite relatively short historical research background, there has been a quite good success in new pesticide R&D. Up to date, seven new pesticides have been discovered and developed, including 4 products on the domestic or world market. These new pesticides consist of a fungicide of ethaboxam, 2 insecticides of bistrifluron and flupyrazofos, and 3 herbicides of pyribenzoxim, flucetosulfuron, and metamifop (Table 1). This report overviews the biological properties and developmental status of these new molecules, and introduces an on-going research project on new pesticide R/D in Korea.
