Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) uses the following process to set the Maximum Residue Limits(MRLs) for pesticide in food. KFDA proposes the draft of MRLs based on the data from Good Agriculture Practice in the use of pesticides. KFDA sets up the Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) considering the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI), food consumption data, and population mean body weight and depending on draft MRLs. KFDA considers processing factors which reflect the decrease rate of pesticides during processing such as drying, heating, and extracting the raw materials to determine the MRLs for ginseng, extract of green tea, wheat flour and dried agricultural commodity. The National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service conducts the laboratory test on the domestic agricultural commodity harvested for pesticides residue while the regional offices of KFDA and sixteen regional offices of Institutes of Health and Environment take charge in the inspection of marketed agricultural products. The regional offices of KFDA and Food Sanitation Institute inspect pesticides residue for imported agricultural products. KFDA provides pesticide standards and validated analytical methods of pesticide residues to the institutes in order for collecting reasonable data from inspection of pesticides residue. Moreover, KFDA makes an effort to enhance the analytical quality of the national and private food sanitation inspection agencies through the regular and consistent education program.
