Spatial distribution of commercial centers is one of key factors to find out internal structure of a city. However, there has not been, still now, even basic study on the commercial centers in Busan. Thus, this paper has the purpose to discover spatial structure and hierarchical change of the commercial centers in Busan. Two key points discovered by research process are : First, Busan has, greatly, changed in hierarchy of the commercial centers during 1981-2000. And with the change, outer zone of Busan has developed prominently during the same period. Second, business function concentrated on the central zone of Busan in 1981 but its location behavior has been decentralized to the outer zone in 2000. It is considered that development of outer zone is originated in decentralization of business function. Thus, it is thought that Busan is confronting with intra-urban decentralization process.
From the two findings, we can look over decay of central zone and new growth of outer zone in Busan. Such the positive and the negative issues generated by the change of hierarchy of the commercial centers are an important task with which Busan municipality is confronted.
