This paper looked at the aspects from which taboos are formed in Korea's representative tales and examined their network of meanings. Prior research has understood taboos in tales as basically "prohibition or restraint," and this understanding has been set against the backdrop of human order and the different level of "divine order." Yet this paper viewed "prohibition" and "restraint" as only surface elements of taboo motifs, finding that the deeper meaning lay in their hinting at or revelation of the most secret providence that is bound up in the decisive moments of life, in the peaks on the road of life. Regarding the idea that taboos were established as boundaries according to the divine order, it was also shown that it was more appropriate to see them as junctions between "the road of humanity" and "yet another road of humanity" - junctions between the road that maintains the status quo and the road that seeks out a new life. Our conclusion is that the cognitive meaning of taboos is implicit at the point where the aims of these two roads clash fiercely, and it is through this that stories manifest their literary vitality. Among Korean tales, The Legend of Jangja Pond (Jangjamot jeonseol) and The Fairy and the Woodcutter(Seonnyeowa namukkun) in particular exhibit this aesthetic of taboos, splendidly showing literary tension. It is hoped that the future will see even more active discussion concerning the multilayered structure of meaning in tales.
