Until recently, there have been advances in studies on the assimilation policies in Japanese Compulsory Occupation Period. The contents of discourses on assimilation policy are astounding in various dimensions. Japanese ruling system on Korea aimed at assimilation gradually and that meant national identity obliteration policy. The significance of the policy is obscure in terms of its content, meaning, and system itself. I would point out the context of the progress, current status, outcome and limitations on the study of Japanese policies of colonialism using the meta-analysis method. Assimilation is the core of content approach.
The thesis is mainly for by and large grasping the general issue rather than specific details. Meta-analysis, an unfamiliar method, is used to bridge the study from the principle and already accumulated results on the issue.
Assimilation is passive and one-way rather than independent and active. The problem of 'hegemony' on the decision maker occurs since one who dominates hegemony unilaterally decides the level of 'assimilation'. Thus, discourses on assimilation and assimilation policy usually contradict with one another.
Looking upon the past studies on assimilation, very basic fact or concept has not yet established due to absence of communication among researchers. In fact, results from Japan gained large attention whereas domestic researchers' works attracted little recognition. Since the beginning of the 21st century, however, studies on Japan's assimilation policy has increased in a rapid pace. Studies are increasing not only in numbers but also in sections and qualities. It is highly recognizable in that today's studies approach the policy in various ways instead of old-fashioned concept establishment or just confirming the fact. In this sense, I chose meta-analysis for investigating assimilation theory.
Current overflow of studies makes this author worried about succession since some important discourses and opinions on assimilation studies have not been able to be succeeded. Assimilation theory allows various historical discourses for it contains discourse and policy.
I hope to establish a new way of understanding the history of Japanese Compulsory Occupation Period in a more comprehensive way with active mutual communication and fruitful discourses.
