In this essay I try to explain why Emily Dickinson gets immersed in nature and explore in what respects it has the prevailing meaning in her poetry. As a nineteenth century woman poet, she suffered from social fetters that the patriarchal Calvinist community imposed upon her. Escaping from “the complicated texture of social existence,” she fled to the mind, the arena where she could live free in her imagination and have communion with nature.
Dickinson's nature poems reveal that nature occupies her mind in various ways. Sometimes it works as the media of social awareness through which she realizes external pressures and expresses her fury against them. Sometimes it is praised as another religion, superseding the strict Calvinist Church which restrained her from sharing thoughts and feelings with the natural world. Most importantly, it is the cognitive reality that incites her to get to the deep understanding of nature itself beyond the conventional humanistic views on natural beings. In her nature poems she shows that she maintains the balanced distance between self and nature and ultimately, by doing so, reaches the modern posture of an ecological poet.
