The leaf and soil chemical properties in citrus orchards in relation to red, red brown or dark brown spots in leaves were determined in Jeju Island, Korea and Mie Prefecture, Japan. The color and shape of the spots were different among citrus cultivars. The soil pH was 4.00-4.75 and 4.50-5.78 in Jeju and Mie orchards, respectively. The Jeju orchards showed the higher soil total-N and lower Ca and Mg content than Mie orchards. The Mn content in the orchards examined ranged from 14.8 to 96.0 ㎎ㆍ㎏?¹. The Mn content in the spotted leaves ranged from 242.0 and 398.0 ㎎ㆍ㎏?¹ (average, 296.0 ㎎ㆍ㎏?¹), whereas the Mn content in leaves without spots ranged 150 to 218 ㎎ㆍ㎏?¹ (average, 182.0 ㎎ㆍ㎏?¹). It seemed that the soil pH affects more greatly on leaf Mn than the soil Mn content does since the correlation between soil pH and leaf Mn was r=-0.59 but r=0.16 between soil Mn and leaf Mn. The measurements using an electron probe microanalyzer revealed that Mn concentration was higher around than inside the spots.
