This research was initiated to screen an efficient cytokinin for lateral branching of Ardisia pusilla DC. native to Korea. 6-Benzylaminopurine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ), and forchlorfenuron (CPPU) were investigated as an acceptable synthetic cytokinin for lateral branching. Plants treated with the three cytokinins induced approximately 30 times more number of lateral shoots compared to the plants untreated. Although all cytokinins used in this study induced many lateral branches, BA was the most effective on inducing lateral branches because TDZ and CPPU produced many short and degenerated lateral shoots. Especially, BA at 1,500 ㎎ㆍℓ?¹ produced 32 vegetative shoots (average 2.5 ㎝-length shoot) per rooted cutting at 60 days after treatment. The increase in lateral shoot number induced by BA treatments was highly dependent on internode position of the plants when foliar-sprayed to the plants. All BA treatments induced the highest lateral shoot number from the 1st to the 2nd node (the second internode), followed by the 2nd to the 3rd node (the third internode) or the 3rd to the 4th node (the fourth internode), while the higher the internode position the longer lateral shoot length was realized in all BA treatments. Moreover, more than 20 saleable cuttings were harvested from the plants treated with 750-1,500 ㎎ㆍℓ?¹ BA foliarspraying at 120 days after initial cutting propagation. It was concluded that BA application induced lateral branches successfully and provided mass propagation of stem-tip cuttings for A. pusilla nursery.
