Headlamps illuminate the road in front of the car and must meet the requirements of all road users. In particular, the low-beam is designed to protect oncoming traffic from being dazzled. But non-standard bulbs in the market and mis-aiming of bulb in headlamp can be caused glare to oncoming drivers and pedestrians. In this study, glare of oncoming drivers was investigated using two methods of glare test. Glare index was obtained by measuring illuminance at eye point, adaptation luminance and angle between light sources and driver's position. Sensibility test of glare was performed by 35 of subjects. Three kinds of bulbs and two kinds of light sources(H4 and H7) as a function of aiming conditions were used in this experiment. The experimental results were compared with those of standard bulbs. Consequently, glare index of non-standard bulbs were much higher than standard bulb. Non-standard bulbs(coated halogen and remaking HID bulb) and mis-aiming conditions brought about disturbing and unbearable glare to oncoming driver.
