This article aims to establish the necessity and the potential to reconstruct the labor history and the workers' movement history as local history by means of analysis on the oral sources recorded in Ulsan region. Korean labor history and workers' movement history has been written only within the national context till now, thereby being endowed with its characterizations and assessments in this context. However, now it is time to re-place those histories into the locality where those actual phenomena has happened. To do so it, the people's concrete faces can be described in history. The writing of labor and workers' movement into which most people of contemporary society has been incorporated is needless to say.
To write this advanced labor history and workers' movement history, the recording and utilization of oral sources and the application of oral history method are necessary in the way of the complement to the lack of sources and the adoption of new methodology. The written sources about the people who have done work and practised workers' movement are scarce. It is the oral sources which contain the interviews with workers that complement and go beyond this scarcity.
Certainly, the “faultiness” of memory makes the critical investigation of oral sources inevitable. But historians don't have to evade them on the excuse of this “faultiness”. The critical reading of oral sources can be exercised through the radical comparison with the written sources and other oral sources. This utilization of oral sources makes possible the reconstruction of the numerous facts and the actual regional currents which has been missed. Moreover, it encourage historians to pursue new histories beyond the existing writing of history.
