A femme fatale is one of the main subject matters in literature, history, or paintings. Examples of femme fatales include Cleopatra and Empress Yang of China who are both well-known historical figures, Chosun from the Three Kingdoms, Eve and Delilah from the Bible, and Medusa and Pandora from the Greek mythology. They has made their appearance in the contemporary pop culture.
The reason why a femme fatale was popular in art in the end of 19th century was that women whose social status was improved by rapid industrialization and urbanization actively demanded the social status equal to males, freedom, and emancipation. Thus, men felt intangible uneasiness or fear for the femme fatales who rebelled the traditional patriarchical system and represented females as seductive women or witches. That is, a femme fatale was created by combining men's sexual fear and desire towards women with fantasy.
Since a femme fatale seduces with her fatal beauty, her style gets very popular. From the most imitative and easily available style is makeup.
In this study, the representative images expressed in literature or pictures are described, the femme fatale established as a popular image, and the femme fatale image represented in movies based on the 19th century when a femme fatale was popular. Also, the images represented in movies, which are the center of media are studied and the style and makeup of a femme fatale expressed in movies are analyzed keeping abreast of the times of Hollywood and Korean movies. This study classifies the makeup of a femme fatale in movies into an innocent image, a sexy image, and an avant-garde image depending on the common features of femme fatales in movies.
Also, the femme fatale image of Hollywood and Korean movies has changed with universality and particularity. How makeup is synthetically done depending on image features is described.
