This study analyzed the uses and gratifications of the Internet by Korean adolescents and parents-adolescents communication style. The subjects were 187 adolescents who are attending in a church in Seoul.
Factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and correlation were employed to analyze the data. The findings of this study were as follows.
Factor analysis reduced the variables into 3 categories for the Internet gratifications, and 3 for the parents-adolescents communication styles. All 6 categories are entertainment-escape, information-seeking and surveillance, interpersonal and social communication, positive-communication style, passivecommunication style, negative-communication style.
T-test showed male students are more oriented for entertainment-escape gratification and passive-communication style than female students. High school students are more oriented for using the Internet in the information-seeking and surveillance purpose than middle school students.
One-way ANOVA showed the Internet heavy users used the Internet for entertainment-escape and interpersonal and social communication purpose.
Finally, the factors between Internet gratifications and communication styles were correlated to find out their relationships. The results showed positive-communication style group was strongly correlated with information-seeking and surveillance gratification purpose. The passive-communication style group was correlated with entertainment-escape and interpersonal and social communication gratification purpose.
