The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-weeks of L-carnitine supplementation (1 g/dose, 3 times/d) on lipid metabolism, maximal exercise capacity, and recovery rate in untrained and mildly obese subjects. A total of 20 young adults was recruited and equally divided into two groups; control group (CON, 6 men and 4 women, 27.2±4.5 yrs, 168.4±8.6 ㎝, 75.9±11.4 ㎏, 29.7±5.2% body fat), and carnitine ingestion group (CIG, 6 men and 4 women, 26.2±3.3 yrs, 165.8±9.1 ㎝, 70.2±13.8 ㎏, 31.9±5.1% body fat). Subjects in CIG orally ingested L-carnitine while no treatment was administered for the subjects in CON. Evaluations of body composition, exercise capacity test, blood lipid profiles were conducted before and after the 4-weeks of experimental period. By the L-carnitine treatment, total carnitine in CON (50.9±10.9 μM/L) was higher than CIG (76.8±22.1 μM/L) (p<.05>.The free carnitine (67.1±19.2 vs 48.7±10.0 μM/L) and acyl carnitine (10.8±7.1 vs 2.2±1.5 μM/L) was also higher in CIG than in CON (p<.05). No differences were found between groups in mean body weight and body fat contents before and after the experiments. The maximal aerobic capacity and the respiratory exchange ratio were not changed during the experiments. The resting blood lactate level was 2 m㏖/L, but it was drastically elevated after maximal aerobic exercises to 11 m㏖/L. However, the elevated level did not return to the base line after 30 min of recovery. Blood levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density liporotein, low-density lipoprotein, free fatty acids, glucose were maintained within the normal range and these variables were not changed after the experiment. In conclusion, the 4-weeks of L-carnitine supplementation did not modify body composition, blood lipid levels, exercise capacity, as well as recovery rate in those who did not participate in an aerobic exercise and/or in muscular strength exercises with mildly overweighted.
