The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of physical activity to bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar and femur regions, and to find the relationship of age, age at menarche, body fat to BMD in premenopausal women. 80 women as four groups (sedentary, swimming, aerobic dance, and weight training) were sampled in Inchon and Seoul. Data on pattern, frequency, duration, participation period of physical activity, age, age at menarche were collected through questionnaire. BMD at lumbar and femur regions were evaluated by DEXA(Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) in Ⅰ University Medical Center. Statistics emloyed for data analyses were t-test, ANOVA, multiple regression. SPSS-PC program was used for statistical analysis. Based upon the results of this study, the following conclusions were indicated.
1. Mineral density at lumbar region was found significantly different according to the pattern, frequancy, duration and participation period of physical activity, and age.
2. BMD at femur region was found significantly different according to the pattern, duration and participation period of physical activity, activity level at adolescence, and age.
3. Mineral density at lumbar and femur were significantly correlated with physical activity pattern, frequancy, duration, participation period, and physical activity level at adolescence. And BMD of femur was also correlated with age.
4. For BMD at lumbar region, physical activity pattern and participation period, and age were significant predictors, accounting for 82%.
5. Physical activity pattern and period, activity level at adolescence, and age were predictive of BMD at femur region, accounting for 42%.
This cross-sectional study of middle-aged women suggested that regular participation in physical activity have positive effects on bone mass of lumbar and femur regions, resisting against age-inducing bone loss. Mineral density at lumbar and femur regions were significanly related with their participation in physical activity. And mineral density of middle age women was also closely related to activity levels at adolescence. It seemed that active life style in early stage of life has chronically positive effects on bone mass throughtout life. The promotion for active life style from early stage of life would be beneficial in terms of prevention from osteoporosis.
