This paper aims to illuminate a main theme in modern American literature, namely 'the loss of identity and its restoration' through Saul Bellow's novel, Herzog. It also gives some lights on Bellow's technique.
Herzog's experiences are mysteries to him because their individual meanings are embedded within his confused mental process. Yet the narrator observes that, though he still behaved oddly, he felt confident, cheerful and strong. He is embittered by his opponents: wife, friends and mainly his own ego. He feels to be a dwarf. But under these circumstances, he tries to find a way out of them.
As an intellectual, he tried to behave reasonably. But he has to admit his limits. Basically he is imprisoned in his shameless and impotent privacy. The conflict is within himself, and this story is a psychological journey of Herzog himself. The worst enemy is himself, and he struggles comically with himself. He comes to realize at last that what he considered his intellectual privilege has proved to be another form of bondage.
Through various experiences, Herzog is released from a self-imprisoning hatred toward him, and recognizes that there are unaccountable vices in the world. He does not try to explain them in his own terms. Now he accepts the world and himself as they are. And through this novel, Bellow shows a profound comprehension of the mixed nature of life using comic technique which tells indirectly the faults of the hero.
