This study aims to look into how the Korean society is adopting the social-ecological point of view by examining a number of ecology novels that reflect the unique political and economic situation in Korea where the top priority has been placed on growth-oriented industrial policies ever since the 1970s. In addition, this paper confirms the validity of Murray Bookchin’s idea that remaking the social structure can be a solution to the eco-crisis faced by the Korean society, by studying a series of literary productions that show social problems, the fundamental factors in social ecology, are the very cause of the eco-crisis.
The purpose of such effort is to prove ecological problems are related to all aspects of the human society by demonstrating that ecology novels deal with not only environmental issues but also all kinds of troubles found across the human society. Despite extensive discussions of ecological critics and their ever-broadening viewpoint, some still want to remain as slaves to mysticism, considering nature simply as an equivalent of environment, while some others have skepticism about benefits of ecological critique. Against this backdrop, this paper is designed to present Bookchin’s broad point of view on nature, thereby putting an end to unnecessary debates and clearing the way for more productive discussions as to ecological critique.
This research has found that hierarchical mechanisms were the cause of eco-crises in most of the 27 novels. Lee, Cheong describes in Rowing with the Broken Oar introspection process of the protagonist who proceeds towards liberty nature, while Song of Life by Woo, Han-yong presents an outlook for alternative communities.
Now that a number of signs of social-ecological perception are found in many ecology novels in Korea, it is necessary to start and continue discussions in order to investigate Bookchin’s concept of liberty nature, dialectic logos, and concreteness of alternative communities. This effort is expected to also encourage writers to have a better understanding of ecological discussions, which will be the new aesthetic order of the next century, and to go beyond simply taking environment as one of the subject matters in their stories or making weak accusation against environmental problems, thereby laying the foundation for prosperity of ecology novels with diverse perspectives.
The social-ecological Telos, therefore, should be sought after in the course of evolution of the ecological society in line with the reality of Korea, not in the limited world presented by Bookchin. I hope this research will contribute to realizing the unlimited potential of ecological critique by promoting social-ecological discussions, ultimately leading to increased diversity in Korean modern novels.
