Naxi ethnicity not only have old pictographs, but also have beautiful ecological environment because Naxi ancestor have preserved their Naxi dongba tradition and the related prominent ecological concepts. It is general opinion that the origin of Naxi ethnicity was from Qiang tribe of HeHuang(河湟) region. Because of the white stone-worship of Qiang tribe, It will may be certain that Naxi tribe yet have worshipped white stone in their spring festival. It seems that in ancient time passing through Gongge Mountain several division of Qiang tribe settled in Lijiang area.
Naxi ethnicity have various traditional festivals like as Lunar New Year Festival, Dongba Assembly(東巴會),BanBan Festival(棒棒會), Shan Duo Festivale (三朶節 or BeiYue Temple Festival), Bai Sha Farm-Tool Fair(白沙農具會 or Mule and Horse Fair" in July) and God of the Rain Festival in March(龍王廟會). Their trditional festivals have several hybridities opriginated from Bon Religion, Taoism, Tibetal Buddism and Confucianism.
Carting out ethnic adaption poliy(ex gai tu gui liu:改土歸流) by Qing government gave potnetial influence on Naxi traditional culture. Naxi society do not have matrilineal society, but Mosuo people near Lugu Lake relion still have matrilineal society, because Tusis(土司) of Yongning(永寧) area have a deep appreciation about Mosuo matrilineal society.
Owing to its special characteristics of ethnic culture, Lijiang Old Town of China was enlisted to be one of the World Cultural Heritage Gities by UNESCO on Dec. 4th, 1997, thus becoming the first cultural heritage city in China. Thus, Lijiang has a precious wealth shared, treasured and possessed by the entire world. The Naxi of Ljiang County, Yunnan Province, are an ethnic minority whose elite members have for centuries displayed a high degree of sinicization. They have borrowed many cultural practices of the Han Chinese majority, including the organizations known as Dongjing associations (dongjinghui:洞經會).
we must have great concern about restoration of Naxi traditions as a patina(Grant McCaken[1988]Gulture and Consumption).
1) Lijiang Gty Government appointed Dadong Town(大東鄕), Baoshan Town(寶山鄕), Bengke Town(奉科鄕), Ludian Town(魯甸鄕), Tacheng Town(塔城鄕) and Tai'an Town(太安鄕) as Dongba ethnic ecovillages.
2) establishment of Lijiang Dongba culture School & Dongba Culture Research Institute for Dongba culture specialists
3) appointment of Dongba culture traditional site
4) appointment of Dongba Culture model School
5) establishment of popular Dongba tradition group
6) civil establishment of association and meeting of for studying dongba culture
For making & development of Naxi ethnicitic identity we must have great consideration about diffusion and inner transmission of material & intangible Dongba cultural properties. Lijiang City Goverrunent have primay concern about Dongba culture of Iijiang area. but restoration & revitalization of Dongba culturewill be diffused to MuIi County(木里縣),Ninglang County(寧?縣) and Shangrila County(香格里拉縣) by Lijiang Government. Especially, we must great consequence to the Dongba Culture of BaishuiTai area, Shangrila County as country town of Naxi ethnicity.
