The history of the Korean people in the 20th century began with the Japanese imperial occupation of the Korean soil, and also all kinds of pains that entailed such barbaric infringement upon the sovereignty of the Korean people. The liberation of Korea became the ultimate objective of the utmost importance shared by all Korean people, and to the Korean people the struggles that continued to that end were the sole legitimate efforts needed for the independence-seeking Korea. The movements for Independence continued in various shapes and forms, and such shapes and forms were determined by the difference of opinions over the issue of the ideology that would later nourish the new government which would be established by the Korean people, and also the issue of choosing factions that would lead such government.
Historical studies of those national movements have also been affected by such circumstances that presented subjugation and division. Due to the differences in the South and North governments’ positions, or the differences in the perspectives and views of the individual historians, the terms used in referring to the national movements considerably differed. National movements were sometimes referred to as ‘Independence movements’, and in other occasions they were referred to as ‘National Liberation(Emancipation) movements’. Sometimes they were just called simply, National movements. Such differences, demonstrated by selective terminology, also represented the existence of much bigger differences, such as the differences in the suggested scope and boundaries of the national movements. Even the descriptions of facts were not entirely free from being affected by the author’s ideological preferences and bearings, as such bearings clearly had influences upon the process of choosing events to elaborate in the first place.
In this article, the historical studies of the national movements that have been conducted by the South Korean historians for the past decades will be examined, but not in chronological orders or with thematic classifications. The historical studies will be examined with them arranged in two groups, a group of historical studies that represent the views generally favoring the term ‘Independence movements’, and another group of historical studies that represent the views generally favoring the term ‘National liberation(emancipation) movements’. This kind of categorization is based upon the need to account for the individual historian’s perspective viewing the past and present. And it is expected that such attempt would be helpful to not only the task of evaluating the historical studies that have been conducted so far, but also the task of projecting the course the ensuing historical studies on the subject should take in the future.
