In 1983, I published a paper, titled "Research Introduction for Fieldwork of Folksongs" which discussed about the instructions of potable cassette tape recorder and camera at field research based on my fieldwork experience. The analog recorder and film camera in the 1980s have been replaced by digital recorder and camera in the 2000s. These changes led me to re-write this paper based on my previous paper. In this paper, I add newly the contents of digital machinery. Simultaneously the basic structure of my previous paper in 1983 remains as before in this paper, because thoroughgoing study about the mechanism is closely related to the scholarship.
In the section for the potable recorder, I explain about the instruction of a microphone and the dubbing, and I emphasize the importance of various recording cards that will constitute the archives.
In the next section for the camera, I describe various kinds of lenses such as the normal lens, wide-angle lens, telephoto lens, macro lens and others with their parts related to the zoom function. I stress here that zoom wide-angle lens is essential for indoor fieldwork, whereas 200㎜ zoom telephoto lens is suitable for outdoor field research.
In the section for the film, I illustrate the sensitivity of film, and emphasize that the film is now replaced by the digital, CCD(Charge Coupled Device), and how it makes simple the data storage, transmission and printing. I also mention here that it becomes now much faster and more accurate than before, because of the digital function.
I also show in this paper that the most basic but important thing in management for the machinery is to avoid sunlight and moisture and not to drop it. The machinery's state and sound conditions should be checked before purchase of a recorder. Also, when the digital camera is purchased, the pixel should be checked as in the case of camcoder.
At the spot of fieldwork, the collector should be modest and polite, because ordinary people tend to hesitate to sing or to show something in front of the microphone. In such cases, the collector can be compared to a psychologist.
The folksongs constitutes the basics of all music, and a voucher of people's culture that vividly include people's spirit. The fieldwork for folksongs is a crucial process to understand the spirit of people that is hidden in folksongs and to practice love to people. It is the recorder and recording card that record such a pilgrimage.
The scene of fieldwork that can be caught in the camera view finder is a small universe. The recording of it is a chronological recording process of our history. The fieldwork that catch the spot of singing folksongs in a recorder and camera is another historiography that upgrades the level of our history.
