There are 'lullabies' (sounds to let baby sleep) and 'soothing sounds for baby' in folk songs related to childcares. The soothing sounds, made for babies physical and functional developments, show complex and diverse structures of music unlike their simplicity of narration patterns. The sounds are usually uttered when a physical contact is made with baby. This study examines four different soothing sounds (dal-gang dal-gang, doong-gae doong-gae doong-gae-ya, bul-a bul-a, doong-doong-doong nae-sarang-a) in the aspects of word placing to the melodies, tempo, compass, mode and melodies.
Considering the patterns to place lyric words to the soothing sounds, the words are surely placed on the first beat in each rhythm within a tone with tertiary small beats and quadruple times. As for tempo, M. M.0 64-80 (1 rhythm of 17-20), dose to the number of peoples breaths for one minute, is generally found. The compass is shown in diverse ranges according to the songs ; however, it usually ranges within one octave of seven notes. The mode of the soothing sounds mainly selects menari-tori and the last note usually ends with a lower scale than the original one. The melodies found in the four soothing sounds are different in patterns. These patterns are divided into simple patterns of ascending or descending, a repeating pattern of ascending and descending, and an extended pattern of ascending and descending composition.
'Dal-gang Dal-gang' relatively shows a standard pattern of baby-soothing sounds with its regular type of word placing, narrow compass, regular uses of modes, two melody patterns. The songs 'Doong-gae Doong-gae Doong-gae-ya' and 'Doong-doong-doong Nae-sa-rang-a' have diverse and complex characteristics through the musical interactions with other songs or genres. These characteristics are found in the diverse-typed word placing, fast tempo, wide-range of compass, mixed patterns of modes, and complex melody patterns of more than three types. The complexity is found in 'Btl-a Bul-a' in the aspects of word placing and mixed mode usage, however, the simplified and regular patterned characteristics are also found in the song with singing speed with slow tempo and melody patterns.
Even though baby-soothing sounds have simple patterns of oral narrations, various musical struerures are found in each song. This reveals that the patterns of uttering baby-soothing sounds have open structures of music. In other words, soothing sounds for baby have both fixed axis and transformed aspects through interactions with other musical genres. The labor of childcares is continuously performed till now. Recently people pay more attention to traditional methods for childcares and the effotts to find new alternatives from old wisdoms. In this situation, a study on the soothing sounds for baby is somewhat significant.
