The modern historic environment, which is the subject of this paper, can be defined as a region or landscape having organic physical and cultural characteristics. which reflects the historic context of an modern era(from the civilization period(the late 19C) to the liberation period(the late 19405)) in Korea. And because it is mostly situated on the old urban district and periphery, it (an define a result of a synergistic relationship between regional history and spatial patterns through time. This paper is to explore a new paradigm for conservation of such modern historic environment in Korea. Generally. for this, we should discuss following questions ; “Why should conserve,” “What should conserve.” “Who should conserve.” “How should conserve” etc. This paper aims to secure the proper answers of the first and second arguments. Through this works, this paper proposes an alternative vision to the cultural properties and architecture-oriented approaches in Korea.
The unique system of the modern historic environment in Korea has been maintained in close connection with the regional environment, for some 100 years. Thus the modern historic environment can be defined as the medium of regional past and future as it has changed through time. Therefore it is necessary that concern for the modern historic environment should diversify and enlarge. and not concentrate solely on the historic elements. In terms of this concerns, this paper suggests introduction of “conservation” as practical concept in the light of regional revival. A series of phenomena are offering new opportunities for the corning decade. These include the increase of concern for the development of regional identity and attempts to change the reconstruction method of local cities. Finally, the diverse ideologies and basic approaches fer the conservation of modem historic environment, able to use as valuable tools for regional revitalization, is strongly suggested.
