The 'social place' is defined in this study as a 'place of human association'. The concept is formulated by the conceptual integration of various elements of people's place-attachment in terms of territorial behavior and daily social interactions of people. An organizing pattern of social places in a neighborhood provides an important reference system for the design of socio-culturally similar neighborhoods.
It is contended that working-class populations in inner-city areas show a tendency of a place-attached neighborhood life to form an 'integrated' organization of the 'social places' It is hypothesized that the level of integration in the organizing pattern of social places correlates with the level of people's 'sense of belonging' to neighborhood area. The model was applied to the study of an inner-city neighborhood in Philadelphia where several subcultural areas coexist. The findings support the contention.
The results of this investigation lead to the following conclusions concerning urban neighborhood design :
(1) Working-class populations perceive their immediate local areas (such as stoops, sidewalks, streets and local commercial facilities) as integral part of their homes.
(2) Their close relationship with places is a primary grounding for achieving a 'satisfactory' residential environment.
(3) The layout of neighborhoods for working-class populations in urban areas should be 'integrated' as a corollary of the organization of the 'social places'.
