The emphasis of this study is placed upon comparing leisure of urban residents with that of rural, and identifying characteristics and determinents of their leisure.
The sample consisted of 480 (250 males, 230 females) urban and 462 (210 males, 252 females) rural adults except students, ranging in age from twenty to sixtynine. 942 time-budget diaries of a sunday were collected at the end of April in 1983 in Cheonnam Province.
Data were analyzed in terms of percent of respondents to participate in each leisure activity, mean of consuming time of the activity, and T - t est between mean of each leisure time consumed by urban residents and that by rurlal with subanalysis by levels of sex, education, occupation and age.
98 separate activities in urban subjects and 84 in rural demonstrate the diversity of leisure activities, however, a small core of activities (TV, rest, visit) takes larger portion of a total of leisure time in both urban and rural respondents. The higher percent activity in participation is the more time-consuming, and most subjects spend more their leisure time at home than away from home. The subanalysis indicates that differences in leisure activities are attributed to the levels of sex, education, occupation, and age.
