This article provides a historical description of the highway development in the United States. It gives account of how the present highway network in the United States, streching nearly 4 million miles (including city streets), has come into being from a humble beginning of "Indian Trails."
The focus of this article lies on the evolution of the road network in the U.S. It depicts the historical development of the highway system as a concommitant of the interaction of a host of socio-economic and technological developments. These developments were in fact the dominant forces in shaping the history of the U.S.
Discussed in considerable details in this paper are the early turnpikes, the antomobile and highway, some land-mark highway legislation and the emergence of the Inter-state system.
Also discussed is the cooperative partnership in the federal system of the U.S. government, under which the federal government has taken an increasingly important role in the highway building over the past decades.
