The purpose of this study is to explore the social and cultural meaning that are embodied in greenspace(公園綠地) and role that greenspace play in enhancing a sense of community in order to suggest basic guidelines for sustainable urban development in Taegu, The research shows that local people believe that familiar greenspaces are constituted of not only the official greenspaces, such as the neighbourhood park and children’s park, but also by the unofficial greenspaces, such as mineral springs and street trees. The local people’s perception of familiar green space is quite different from the type of green space which is produced by the application of urban planning law in Korea. In addition, people in Taegu showed deep concern that mountain type greenspace should be provided in the future development. When planning greenspace in cities such as Taegu, local government should pay attention to the mountain areas and use them to enhance the genius loci of the city, instead of just providing expensive greenspace on private land.
Compared to men, women show some significant differences of motivation for use, reason for non-use and value of green space. In the case of women, the desire “ to find peace and quiet”, “ get out of the house” and “ for a special treat or occasion” categories were more frequently mentioned than others. This reflects that the greenspace provides a respite for women suffering from the burden of housework and childcare.
Accordingly, it is strongly recommended that the city policy-makers allow people to speak for themselves and those involved in the decision-making to reach a consensus supported by the general public, and more comprehensive scheme for the development of a city’s sustainable greenspace planning policy.
