The purpose of this paper is to analyze location pattern of urban facilities. Location patterns are classified into three types, random, concentration and dispersion type. And nearest distance concept is introduced and the equations to calculate the theoritical frequency distributions of nearest distances are proposed using probabilities of appearance in a certain zone. After comparing the frequency distribution of theoritical nearest distance to that of real states by χ², location patterns are classified into two types, random or not. If not random, then they are subdivided into concentration or dispersion type.
As an application, two different cities are selected through the factor and cluster analysis, Changwon and Masan. And Post Office, Korean Traditional Hospital, Restaurant and Car Selling Store are the sample facilities selected. Considerations are given to find two facts. One is to analyze location pattern. The other is to know whether location patterns are different if the characteristics of cities are different.
As conclusions, followings can be said. ① Post Office of which the location is decided by administrative planning, is dispersion type and other commercial facilities are concentration type as a whole. ② It is more likely for administerative facility to be dispersion type when city is well planned. ③ The necessities of measuring technique of nearest distance and objective selecting reasons of sample facilities are emphasized.
