The aim of this study is designing primary school as a community space, which emerges from uniform character and relflects the specific character of Hanok village, located in Gahoe-dong, Jongro gu, Seoul through re-development of Jaedong Primary School. Hanok village in Gahoe-dong has preserved old style and position as the center of Seoul and it has unlimited potentials to be developed with cultural infra structure. In order to maximize the potentials, differences of levels and narrow paths are chosen as the most important design elements after analysis on Hanok village.
Through using the differences of levels, I remove the retaining wall of Jaedong Primary School and use underground of existing playground. The conclusion of the application of differneces of levels to Jaedong Primary School is as you see below:First, through removing existing closed wall, we can flow inhabitants' circulations naturally and make them to remember the memories of past with the scale of narrow paths in Hanok village. In addition, through the underground community facilities, we can expect free and flexible circulations to the opposite side of site, which is closed now and visible change of section of inner street make users to feel the space of Hanok village. New information center takes a role as a gateway of Hanok village to foregners. Students are able to take new kind of education when their before and after class, through experiencing various events, which are from underground community facilities. Second, the narrow paths are arranged and the parking problems of inhabitants are solved through underground parking system of school. At the same time, we can expect foregners' easy access. Third, the school takes a role as the center point, which connects natural and cultural infra near the site. In addition it forms cultural network so Gahoe-dong area can be activated.
