As new demands for the dwelling environment such as functionality and diversity have recently emerged, the functional construction material market is facilitated in the construction material sector based on the products using far infrared rays, anions and environment-friendly materials. However, it is substantially difficult to select materials due to the lack of objective quality standards or assessment methods for these functional construction materials. For this study, we compared and evaluated domestic functional wall-covering materials by performing the indoor test and mock-up test on functional wall-covering materials produced and sold in Korea. Through the evaluation of basic physical properties and functions, we can provide basic data to apprehend the quality level of domestic functional wall-covering materials at present. In this study, we conducted tests on products of 8 companies with respect to functional criteria such as far-infrared rays, anions and deodorization and basic physical properties. As a result, all the products posted similar far-infrared emissivity ranging from 91.1% to 91.7%, but demonstrated a significant difference in the formaldehyde deodorization (64~88%) and anion tests. These differences among the products remained the same in the sample room as well as in the indoor test. Accordingly, we were able to confirm differences in the quality among products owing to the comparative test results on the functional wall-covering materials. In order to establish reliability of functional wall-covering materials in the future, we believe that it is necessary to perform additional study on the objective quality standards, test method enactment and functional products' influence on the human body.
