The study is focused on tradition and innovation that appeared in Italian architecture and cities in the 1960s through the 1940s. The issue of the tradition and the innovation signals the start of the study of typo-morphology that appeared in the Italian architecture and city planning in the 1960s. The study has centered around two significant periods. First, it is the pried of Fascism where extreme ideologies prevailed. Second, it is the period of national reconstruction that had been pursued by the Italian government after the end of the Second World War. Buzzwords during the two periods were tradition and innovation. The first period is related to bureaucratic style that was pursued by bureaucrats and politicians and rational architectural composition (composizione architecttonica) based on the harmonization of tradition and modernity. The former aimed to strengthen system; through monuments that could express traditional components, and the latter aimed to achieve rational architectural composition that involved formative clarity and restrained expression in consideration of cultural background.
The second period centered on a construction program for national rebuilding after the collapse of the Fascism and the end of the Second World War. The Italian government that paid a lot of attention to the construction of houses asked architects to play an important role. They highlighted tradition and regionality as important elements of expression in the composition of architecture (composizione architecttonica). INA Casa was a representative project to provide and construct houses, and L. Quaroni, M. Ridolfi, W. Frankl and S.Muratori played a central role in the construction of houses. What the Italian architects had in common was that they reused cultural elements that had been applied in the past. Maintaining unique cultural images in architecture and cities was viewed as an attempt to find the identity of Italy, and it took on nationalist tinge. Against this backdrop, the typo-morphology that characterized the Italian architecture and cities emerged in earnest in the 1950s.
