Gaewha Gasa is a branch of traditional Korean poem Gasa. It treats very intensive issues of a specified period which is early modem times. As the poems were written for the purpose of regaining national rights and by means of a patriotic enlightening movement, the outward circumstances and factors act as a key to decide the structure and the theme of this genre. These circumstances were at first suitable to practical writings. According to enlarging the utility of writings, gradually removed to literary form and expression.
In this process the theme of the poems was restricted by the society and the period, especially combined with three factors - the objective characters, their behavior style, and the writers' point of view. Almost of the writers were reporters or editors of newspapers. The major and most important newspaper is Daehan Maeil Sinbo(Korean Daily News). In KD.N. and some other newspapers carried very typical themes of poems.
In the poems the political ruling class consistently revealed corruption and inefficiency. There is not any affirmative behavior. It is a reflection of writers' consciousness that the political rulers are absolutely responsible for loosing national right. The social organizations are obviously divided into two groups. One is patriotic society and the other is betrayers of country. The writers give biting scolding to the latter. In many poems the writers are taking serious view of modernized learning, but disregard to the traditional learning. Especially severly blame and attack to the stiff necked scholars. It is because most of the rulers were Confucian scholars, and they were responsible for selling country.
Gaewha Gasa is a genre developed in the early modem times. As a whole it is valuable for tending toward the modernity in Korean literature.
