Particularly since the early 1970s, there have been a range of highly sophisticated arguments and conceptual discussions put forward in relation to how western liberal democratic societies should manage their diverse populations. However, it is apparent that in the current climate the important principles of unity and diversity are insufficient in challenging different forms of ethnic and inequality. This paper argues that British multiculturalism receives criticism for its underlying assumptions and modus operandi in the post-l I September climate, with some commentators suggesting a return to assimilation. Indeed, there is not quite the return to assimilation as some commentators are alluding to but a new era in post-11 September political hegemony, economic determinism, media bias, and structural and cultural racisms in relation to British Muslim groups in particular. Government rhetoric and public policy are almost exclusively aimed at Muslim groups whether as existing British Muslims or as part of a process of reducing immigration (which up until recently has been from mainly Eastern Europe, North Africa and Middle East Muslim sending regions and nations). The discussion explores this issue with special reference to the British South Asian Muslims and debates that emerge in relation to identity, nation and civil society. It is argued that multicultural ideology, policy and practise have been unsuccessful in relation to Muslims. The experience and treatment of Muslims is important to explore in the current climate as it provides a test case for the future a) of multiculturalism and b) of British Muslims pe se.
